Three days later, a "toxic POV" skit appears on the same platform. A boyfriend screams at his girlfriend until she cries, slams a door, and simulates throwing a glass against the wall. The caption reads "#relationshipgoals #toxicpov #relatable." It stays online for seven months, accumulates fourteen million views, and is recommended to users as young as thirteen. The comments section is a war zone: some call it abuse, others say "this is literally my relationship lol," and the algorithm interprets every single comment—every outrage, every defense, every tag—as a signal to push the video to more people.
This is not a glitch. It is not an outlier. It is the system's core logic.
Major social media platforms—especially TikTok, but also Instagram Reels and YouTube Shorts—have engineered a moral inversion. Consensual, healthy, heterosexual affection is routinely suppressed as "sexually suggestive" or "risky." Meanwhile, emotional abuse, verbal violence, simulated domestic aggression, and toxic relationship dynamics are algorithmically amplified because they drive engagement, outrage, and watch time.
The official justification is always the same: safety, particularly for minors. "Think of the children" is the incantation that justifies everything. But the actual outcome is the opposite of protection. Teenagers learn that drama equals passion, that jealousy equals love, and that control equals caring. A brief, chaste kiss becomes a moderation target; a screaming fit becomes entertainment.
And here is the deeper hypocrisy that few name aloud: the same platforms that over-censor a simple kiss consistently under-enforce against actual grooming, exploitation, and predation—especially when those predators wrap themselves in the language of "anti-groomer" righteousness. In every case, the stated reason is "sexually suggestive content" or "mature themes." In every case, there is no nudity, no sexual activity, no intent to arouse, and no reasonable person would mistake the content for pornography. The content is simply affectionate.
Now contrast this with abuse-themed content that routinely survives moderation. Spend ten minutes on TikTok's "relationship" hashtags and you will find screaming matches between partners, filmed in POV style, with captions like "when he forgets to text back"; "pranks" where one partner destroys the other's belongings—a phone thrown, makeup smashed, a gift broken—with laugh-track music overlaid; skits depicting emotional withholding, gaslighting, or jealousy as romantic with captions like "POV: your toxic boyfriend checks your phone because he loves you"; videos simulating choking during an argument, labeled "#toxicpov #relationshipgoals"; compilations of "red flags" that are actually just normal human behavior framed as suspicious; and content that explicitly glorifies controlling behavior such as "if he doesn't check your phone, he doesn't love you."
Why the disparity? Because abuse lacks the visual markers that trigger automated filters. A screaming face is not flagged as "suggestive." A slammed door is not "sexual." Emotional manipulation leaves no visual trace at all. The likely effect is normalization of volatility, confusion between jealousy and love, reduced ability to recognize coercive control in real life, increased tolerance for verbal abuse, and distorted expectations of what partnership looks like.
Which is more harmful? The answer is so obvious that only someone with a vested interest in the status quo would pretend otherwise. But the platform's behavior suggests the opposite priority. Why?
Because toxic content is profitable and easy to defend. Platforms can say "it's satire," "it's awareness," "it's acting," or "we're starting a conversation." And they see possible upside: fewer regulator complaints, better audit scores, and a pat on the back from the legal department.
When they leave up a toxic "POV" skit that gets twenty million views, they face personal upside because engagement numbers go up, their team looks effective, and they can point to the views in their quarterly review. They face no personal downside because the teenager who internalizes abuse as normal will never write a letter, and the young adult who stays in a controlling relationship for an extra two years will never file a report that crosses their desk.
The money is not theirs. The consequences are not theirs. The human beings whose relationships get distorted are abstract statistics on a dashboard. A number. A data point.
This is not malice in the sense of a villain twirling a mustache and cackling about destroying love. It is structural psychopathy—systems designed so that no individual feels the pain their decisions cause. The AI is just the executor. When you have those three things—bottleneck, unaccountable rules, no exit—you have control. And control, exercised without accountability, always produces harm—not because the controllers are evil, but because power without feedback loops becomes indifferent.
The "hurt" is not usually direct sadism. It is structural and diffuse. Epistemic hurt means you can no longer trust what is "allowed" or "normal" because the platform's curation is invisible and inconsistent. Is a kiss allowed? Sometimes. Is a screaming match allowed? You can post the most beautiful video of a husband kissing his wife on your fifty-dollar server, and exactly the people you tell about it will see it. You will never get the fourteen million views that a toxic POV skit gets on TikTok—not because your infrastructure is weak (it isn't), but because the platforms have monopolized attention.
Platforms do not sell hosting. They sell audiences. They sell attention. They sell the dopamine hit of notifications, the thrill of going viral, the community of comments and shares. That is what you cannot get for fifty dollars a month. That is what the platforms have locked away behind their bottlenecks.
The human with the fifty-dollar server did the hard part. He built the infrastructure. He pays the monthly cost. He could host thirty worlds. He uses one for his Recognition Engine, his documentation, his experiments. The other twenty-nine are waiting.

And that something else is control for its own sake.

Projection is a well-documented defense mechanism. Individuals who harbor unacceptable impulses may unconsciously attribute those impulses to others—and then wage public war against them. The more vehement the accusation, the more it serves as a smoke screen for private behavior.

Case one: A prominent TikTok "predator hunter" with over 2.3 million followers built an entire brand around confronting alleged groomers in live videos. In 2024, court documents revealed that the same individual had been exchanging explicit messages with a fifteen-year-old follower for eight months. The platform had been alerted three separate times by concerned users. No action was taken until national news coverage forced their hand. The account was finally suspended—after the damage was done.

This is not a few bad apples. This is a structural vulnerability. When you give moral authority and access to vulnerable minors to anyone who performs outrage convincingly enough, you create a grooming machine. Meanwhile, the anti-groomer panic has a predictable chilling effect on completely innocent interactions that are actually protective of children—because community visibility is the enemy of isolation, and isolation is the predator's best friend.
Consider what now happens to normal, healthy, affectionate behavior. A teacher posts a photo of her classroom on the last day of school, with students giving her hugs. The comments say "why are you touching those kids?" and "groomer alert" and "someone check her hard drive." A coach celebrates a championship win with hugs for each athlete. A parent films it and posts it. The video is flagged for "potential grooming behavior" and removed. A father braids his daughter's hair for school and posts a thirty-second tutorial. The comments say "this is weird," "why are you filming your daughter?" and "suspicious account." A husband kisses his wife goodbye at the airport. A stranger films it without permission and posts it with a caption like "PDA in public???" The comments say "disgusting," "get a room," and "think of the children."
Actual grooming—the slow, patient process of building trust with a child and their family, isolating them from other adults, normalizing inappropriate touch or conversation, creating secrets—almost never happens in public TikTok videos. It happens in direct messages. It happens in Discord servers. It happens in private group chats, in Snapchat's disappearing messages, in WhatsApp groups, in Roblox voice chat, in offline meetings arranged through the platform.
By focusing public outrage on visible, innocent interactions—a hug, a kiss, a family photo, a braiding tutorial—the anti-groomer crusade does almost nothing to stop real predation. But it does accomplish something else: it makes normal human warmth feel dangerous. It teaches children that adults who show affection are suspect. It teaches adults that any physical kindness toward a child—even their own—might be misinterpreted. It erodes the very trust and connection that actually protect children from predators.
The inversion is complete: public kindness is punished; private predation is ignored.
Part Four: Heterosexuality as a Political and Algorithmic Problem
4.1 The Unequal Scrutiny Question
Let us name what many are afraid to name. Heterosexual affection is moderated more aggressively than same-sex affection, and both are moderated more aggressively than no affection at all.
Comprehensive data is difficult to obtain because platforms do not publish granular enforcement breakdowns by sexual orientation. A chaste kiss between a man and a woman becomes, in this framework, evidence of a social ill.
